What plumbers earn
The Bureau of Labor Statistics groups plumbers with pipefitters and steamfitters. Its May 2025 figures:

BLS also notes that most plumbers work full time, including nights and weekends, and are often on call for emergencies, and that most states and some localities require them to be licensed, which typically takes two to five years of experience and an exam.

Why the billed rate is several times the wage
The hourly rate on an invoice pays for far more than the person holding the wrench. A plumbing company has to cover a stocked service vehicle and fuel, liability insurance and bonding, licensing and continuing education, dispatch and office staff, payroll taxes and benefits, tools and equipment, time spent driving between calls, callbacks under warranty, and the hours when nobody calls at all. What is left is profit. A $90 billed hour and a $30 wage aren't in conflict.
Flat-rate pricing versus time and materials
Many companies no longer bill by the hour for common tasks. They use a flat-rate price book: each task has a fixed price that assumes a standard time plus parts. Fixr's examples include $150 to unclog a drain, $120 to replace a toilet, and a water heater installation at a flat $400 for the first two to three hours of labor, then hourly.
- Flat rate gives you the price before work starts, and the plumber carries the risk of a slow job.
- Time and materials can be cheaper for a quick fix and more expensive for a stubborn one, and the final number isn't known until the end.
Either is fine if you get the number, or the rate and a likely range, before work begins.
Apprentice, journeyman and master
Licensing usually runs in three steps. An apprentice works under supervision while learning. A journeyman is licensed to do the work independently. A master plumber has more years and a further exam, and in many states only a master or a licensed plumbing contractor can pull permits and run a company. The license level shows up in the rate, and it matters most on permitted work.
Minimums, trip fees and time increments
Ask three things on the phone: the service call or trip fee, whether there is a minimum, often the first hour, and the billing increment after that, commonly quarter or half hours. Rate questions, answered plainly
Is a handyman cheaper for small plumbing jobs?
For swapping a faucet or a toilet flapper, often. Many states limit what unlicensed workers may do on water and drain piping, and work that needs a permit usually needs a licensed plumber to pull it.
Do plumbers charge for travel time?
Many fold travel into the service call fee; some charge a separate trip or transportation fee, especially after hours. Fixr lists $50 to $200 for emergency transportation fees.
Why is there a minimum charge?
A visit costs the company a truck, fuel and an hour of a licensed plumber’s day even when the fix takes ten minutes. Minimums of one hour, or a service call fee, cover that.
Are rates higher in some parts of the country?
Yes. Plumbers’ wages vary by state and metro area, and billed rates follow them. National averages are a guide to the structure of a price, not to the number in your area.
