Plumbing emergencies

Emergency plumber: what to do before the truck arrives

A plumbing emergency is water you can't stop, sewage coming up a drain, or a water heater leaking from its tank. Close the nearest valve or the main shutoff first, then call. After hours, Fixr's January 2025 figures show about $150 an hour, a $200 to $300 emergency call-out fee and $50 to $200 for travel.

Call (888) 555-0142

Your call goes to an independent plumbing company that covers your ZIP code. Night and weekend coverage differs by area; see the availability note at the foot of this page.

Do this first

  1. Close the main water shut off valve, or the valve on the pipe that is leaking.
  2. If water is near outlets, cords or the electrical panel, stay out of it and switch off power from a dry spot only.
  3. Open a faucet on the ground floor to drain the pipes, then call.

What counts as a plumbing emergency

The test is whether damage keeps growing while you wait. If you can stop it with a valve, the rest can often wait for daylight.

What after-hours plumbing costs

After-hours work costs more because the company is paying someone to be available, and the fees stack.

On the phone, ask three things before anyone drives out: the call-out fee, the hourly rate after that, and whether the fee applies toward the repair. Write down the name of the person you spoke with.

24 hour plumber: who answers at night

Some companies answer 24/7 with a technician on call; others route night calls to an answering service that books the first morning slot. Both are legitimate, and same-day service is common during business hours in many areas. The difference matters when water is running, so ask which you have reached and when a technician can actually arrive. Our page on how this referral line works explains who takes the call.

What to tell the dispatcher

  • What is happening, where, and since when.
  • What you have shut off, and whether the water is now stopped.
  • What kind of house: basement, crawl space or slab, and roughly how old.
  • Access details: gate codes, parking, pets.
  • Photos, if the company takes them by text or email.

Can it wait until morning?

If the water is off and staying off, nothing is overflowing, and the house is warm enough that pipes won't freeze overnight, waiting for business hours usually saves the emergency fees. Keep the main closed, drain the lines, and switch the water heater to its vacation or pilot setting if the main will be off for hours.

Other problems that are often urgent have their own pages: a main line clog with sewage coming up, and a leaking water heater.

Night and weekend questions

Do plumbers really work nights and weekends?

Many do. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that most plumbers work full time, including nights and weekends, and are often on call to handle emergencies. Whether a company near you has someone on call tonight is a different question, which is why the first call should settle it.

Should I call the water utility or a plumber?

The utility, when there is no water on the whole street, water is leaking at the meter or in the street, or you need the curb stop closed. A plumber, for anything on your side of the meter.

What if I can’t find the main shutoff?

Look where the water line enters the house, then at the meter. The utility can close the curb stop at the meter; call its emergency line if water is running and you can’t stop it.

Is it cheaper to wait for business hours?

Usually. Once the water is off and nothing is overflowing, a morning appointment avoids the emergency call-out fee and after-hours rates.
